The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday was an ideal curtain-raiser. Millions of viewers watched as athletes came together among firework displays, a record-breaking drone show and high emotions kicking off 17 days of frosty athletics.
Ahead of the event, figure skater Adam Rippon hit out at Mr Pence over his record of supporting anti-LGBT legislation and also declined invites to meet with him.
And critics have condemned the vice president for his apparent attempts to isolate North Korea from the Games. He spent the days leading up to the opening ceremony  warning  that the North was trying to “hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games” with its “propaganda”
But North Korea was still welcomed with open arms during the ceremony and crowds roared as athletes from the North and South marched together and their officials shook hands.
