Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed regret on Friday over Russia’s deployment of missile systems on northwestern Pacific islands claimed by Japan.
The missile system deployment is “incompatible with Japan’s position and regrettable,” Abe told a meeting of the House of Councillors. This view has been conveyed to Russia, he said.
Russian media has reported that advanced antiship missile systems have been deployed on Kunashiri and Etorofu, two of the four islands at the center of a territorial dispute between Tokyo and Moscow.
Abe reiterated that the four islands are “an inherent part of Japanese territory.”
The Russian-controlled islands, called the northern territories in Japan, were seized by Soviet troops from Japan in the closing days of World War II.
The prime minister said territorial talks with Russia over the islands need to be promoted in a manner beneficial to both sides.
